Chris Murphy is a fluent songwriter and a versatile guitarist.  His performances include, Traditional and Original songs, in styles that range from finger-picking acoustic blues, to flat-picking with harmonica, accompanied by his clear, wide-ranged vocals.  When the mood is fitting, he will pick up his guitar neck Dobro and play some bottle neck slide, or his fiddle for some “Old Time” fiddle tunes.  Calling his music “country blues-grass,” Chris has been influenced by traditional music, and performers like Doc Watson, Mississippi John Hurt, Neil Young, and Jerry Garcia.

Since returning to the East Coast from California, Chris has been making radio “appearances” along with solo club engagements to support his latest CD, Time and Space.  This CD was co-produced with Phil Rosenthal, formerly of the Seldom Scene bluegrass band, and founder of American Melody Records.  Phil played mandolin and bass on the project.  Stacy Phillips, a well known Dobro player, added Dobro and fiddle.  Time and Space has been put in rotation and is getting airplay at many radio stations across the country.  Time and Space was added to the “Top 10 Folk listing” at station KMUD 91.1 / 88.3 FM in Garberville, California, for January 1999.

While recording Time and Space, Chris took some time off from the studio to travel to Toronto, Canada.  He was one of three hundred acts chosen from three thousand, to perform at the 1996 “North by Northeast Music Conference and Festival.”

While in California, Chris led several bands experimenting with different configurations, toured small clubs and roadhouses up the coastline, and released a self-produced 11 track CD recorded at Fantasy Records Studio in Berkeley.  Scott Cooper, staff writer for the Santa Cruz Sentinel, wrote about the CD: “ … the real strength lies in Murphy’s ability to write authentically good songs.  These are songs you can sing along with, songs that don’t offend you and songs that remain in your head … ”  Ben Jacobs, in his “After Dark” column in the Pacific Sun, referred to Chris as a “multi-instumental whiz” with “strong original song writing, vocals and guitar work.”  Chris has performed at the “High Sierra Music Festivals” both as a solo and with his band, Hetch Hetchy.  Other appearances include “The Bruce Lattimer Show,” a Pacifica based cable program, and on radio stations KPIG and KDBK Live at Five.

Chris started his musical career at a “hootenanny” in Connecticut playing acoustic guitar, later recording his songs in the studio with other local musicians.  After returning to his childhood roots in South Carolina, Chris started to hone his skills on the local club circuit.  Subsequently, he made a trip to Nashville to record his songs with seasoned session musicians.  While in the studio recording the first song, “Mama’s Got The Blues Again,” a wild thunderstorm raged outside which caused a power outage.  Everyone walked out of the blackened studio to find the sun shining, but the power stayed out for a full hour.  The session bass player remarked, “Man, that’s a powerful song!”  Chris relocated to California shortly afterward.

Chris Murphy’s music reflects who he is and what he believes in; he is honest and straight forward with a spiritual connection to the earth … in one word … REAL.
